New Faces – Ian Powell
English Teacher
Mr. Powell heard about his position from a former employee and was driven to apply after hearing all of the good things about Shorecrest. After growing up on Bainbridge Island, he attended Gonzaga University to receive degrees in both journalism and philosophy. Mr. Powell worked as a sports writer in college athletics for some time and did radio sales in DC before getting his masters in teaching in Seattle, which he deems his biggest accomplishment. “It was a hard year of student teaching and coursework,” Mr. Powell says, but it paid off in the end. While he was kid, he wanted to be a video game designer or a professional athlete, but is happy to be teaching here at Shorecrest now. Mr. Powell’s favorite high school memory is being Homecoming King his senior year, he tells today’s high schoolers, “don’t be afraid to fail and don’t be afraid to be wrong, because that is how we learn.”
