On June 21st, the school year ends for the Scots, but for some, the busiest time of the year is just beginning. The summer months for most Shorecrest students are filled with different kinds of chaos, including preparing for college, working, and vacations.
Senior swimmer Miranda Thompson is heading to Chapman University this fall to pursue swimming and majoring in Environmental Science & Policy. In preparation for swimming in college, this summer Miranda said she’s “going to practices and still swimming with my old team and just hanging out with my friends.” She says a typical day for her looks like summer league practice, club practice, and working as a lifeguard at Aqua Club in Kenmore. While she is super excited to move to California in August, she first has an agenda to complete with her club team this summer. “I have a couple more swim meets with some of my good friends on Cascade.” The last hurrah for Miranda will be the Western Senior Zones Championship, in Fresno, CA. “Zones is always super sunny and fun and will be a great way to close out my club swimming career.” While reflecting on her time with Cascade and thinking about leaving makes her a little sad, she’s excited to begin a new chapter of her life while remaining in the pool at Chapman.
Another way the Scots plan to fill their free time this summer is with jobs. Junior Danny Stephenson has been working as a Sheridan Beach lifeguard for 2 years now and typically works about 20 hours a week during the summer. He says it’s the work environment and the fact that all his friends work there that keeps him coming back. Fellow classmate Hazel Anderson is also employed as a lifeguard and says her favorite part of having this job is “getting to sit in the sun all day with my friends while also gaining important work experience that I think will benefit me in the future.” A big draw to Sheridan Beach is that most of the staff is made up of Shorecrest students who grew up swimming with the local summer league that the community club hosts. That, and having daily access to both a pool that overlooks Lake Washington and the lake itself.
Last but definitely not least, traveling takes up quite a bit of time for students over the summer. Whether it´s visiting the next state over, or heading out of the country, many Scots are looking forward to their travel plans. This includes Maisy Frederick, who will be heading to Europe with her grandparents for two weeks in July. ¨We are going to Paris for a week, spending a week on a barge (boat) on the Burgundy Canal, and then we’ll spend our last week exploring the south of France.” She says that out of all of the things they have planned, she is most excited about touring the south of France because of it´s known beauty and opportunity to explore new places and cultures with her family. Fellow junior Carter Nichols also has plans, but a little closer to home. In June, he and his family are heading down to Curlew Lake in Republic, WA. When asked what he is most excited about, he quickly responded, “Going boating in the sun and getting to see family friends I haven’t seen in a while.”
